Allira Riesling 2020

Light straw in colour and brilliantly clear, this Riesling exhibits aromas of Granny Smith apples, fresh lime and lemon with hints of fresh pineapple and orange blossom. These fruity flavours carry through the palate in perfect balance on a fine continual acid framework. This wine finishes very well, creating a very pleasant, long and crisp conclusion.

The fruit for our 2020 Allira Riesling was picked on 11 March and sourced from our ‘Elgo’ Vineyard located in Upton Hill.  At an elevation of 530m above sea level this is the highest of our two vineyards.  The vines are over 20 years old and planted in well-draining granitic soils. Our elevated site means that the vines slowly ripen fruit, which is ideal for the development of the delicious fruit flavours found in cool climate Riesling.

After two consecutive years of severe drought our 2020 harvest resulted in less than half that of a normal year however fruit quality was excellent.

We adopt a minimal approach when making our Riesling, ensuring the preservation of the wonderfully delicate flavours and aromas inherent of the variety. Gentle handling of the fruit and minimal air contact ensures that the sought after characters of Riesling are maintained from harvest through to the bottle. Critically we kept the juice temperature between 10-13 degrees during fermentation to ensure a slow and steady ferment.  Bottled on 10 August 2020 with less than 300 dozen bottles produced.

This wine would complement any Asian inspired dish or any foods with a little spice. It is equally good being served simply as an aperitif. Best enjoyed lightly chilled. The wonderful high acidity and with correct cellaring this wine has long term cellaring potential (10+ years).

Earthy and appealing – This wine will sustain your interest.
The 2006 Allira label is available for as little as $12 and may be the best value varietal around. In a recent blind tasting it outdid many wines twice its price and at dinner was the second choice of the line-up. It has an apple-like nose that grabs you as soon as it’s opened, as well as everything else you look for in a riesling – citrus/fruit balanced with acidity. If you are reluctant to try riesling, this is a great introduction to the variety.
